Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Sociology

Assistant Professor, Research Programmes - Social Sciences, Social Inequality and the Life Course (SILC)

Personal information

Stef Bouwhuis is a postdoc at the department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences of VU University in Amsterdam. He is working as a researcher on the DYNANSE project, on careers of workers with flexible contracts. His research focus is on how meso-level factors (such as employer strategies regarding flexible contracts) and macro-level factors (such as policy and economic context) influence such careers.

Previously he worked as a policy researcher at the municipality of The Hage.

In 2020 he obtained his PhD at the department of Public and Occupational Health of the Faculty of Medicine, VU University Amsterdam. His project focused on precarious work and multiple job holders: workers that hold more than one job. During his PhD project, he also obtained a master's in epidemiology. This master's course mainly focused on quantitative epidemiological research methods.

Previously, Stef obtained two master's degrees from the Nijmegen School of Management, Radboud University Nijmegen: a master's degree in urban planning and a master's degree in political science.

Research

Stef Bouwhuis' research focuses on the causes and consequences of flexible employment, for instance fixed-term contracts and on-call contracts. Questions that he addresses are: why do some employees have flexible contracts, wheares others do not? How does having a flexible contract affect health and well-being? How likely are transitions from flexible employment to permanent employment? How do the policy and economic context influence such transitions? More broadly, his research interest are related to social inequalities and how these are influenced by macro-level structures, such as economic policies.
