Sjoerd Bakker (1973) graduated from the faculty of law of Leiden University (the Netherlands) and obtained his PhD on good faith ('redelijkheid en billijkheid') in contract law in 2012 at the VU University in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Sjoerd worked for many years as an attorney at law in the fields of contract law, corporate law and liability law at renowned Dutch law firms, lastly at Spigt Dutch Caribbean. Currently working as a senior judge at the court of appeal of Arnhem-Leeuwarden (the Netherlands), Sjoerd regularly lectures and publishes in the fields of Dutch and Dutch Caribbean private law, hermeneutics and in relation to fundamental rights and their significance for private law. He is a co-editor of a highly respected reference work on the Dutch law of obligations, author of two monographs (on contract interpretation and on fundamental rights within private law) and member of a Dutch group of Strasbourg court watchers from various Dutch universities, under the auspices of prof. dr. Rick Lawson. Furthermore, he frequently acts as a binding adviser and arbitrator, amongst others for the Dutch Arbitration Institute (Nederlands Arbitrage Instituut).
