Personal information

Roos Nieuwboer studied Law (LL.B.) and Criminal Law with a Specialization in International Criminal Law and Human Rights (LL.M.) at Utrecht University, and Law with a Specialization in Conflict Management, Judiciary and Mediation (LL.M., cum laude) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. As part of her thesis at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Roos conducted empircal research on the possiblities of mediation in domestic violence cases.

During her time as a student, Roos engaged in multiple social initiatives. For example, she provided free legal consults for detainees in different penitentiary facilities within the Netherlands.

Roos Nieuwboer volgde de bachelor Rechtsgeleerdheid en de master Strafrecht met de specialisatie International Criminal Law and Human Rights aan de Universiteit Utrecht. In 2021 heeft Roos aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam de master Rechtsgeleerdheid met afstudeerrichting Conflicthantering, Rechtspraak en Mediation cum laude afgerond. In het kader van haar masterscriptie aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam deed Roos empirisch onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden van mediation in strafzaken bij huiselijk geweld.

Naast haar studie heeft Roos zich herhaaldelijk maatschappelijk ingezet, onder meer als vrijwilliger bij het Juridisch Spreekuur Gedetineerden in de omgeving van Amsterdam.

Research

Roos Nieuwboer started in september 2021 as a PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Law, Private Law Department, of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research concerns the legal support and protection of older persons with impaired decision-making capacity in the Netherlands. Roos is part of the multidisciplinary NWA-ORC consortium STRIDE: 'Towards a new balance in empowerment and protection of older persons'. As of September 2025, Roos has taken on a new role as a postdoctoral researcher.

Roos Nieuwboer is sinds september 2021 als promovenda verbonden aan de faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid, afdeling Privaatrecht, van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Roos doet onderzoek naar de juridische ondersteuning en bescherming van oudere personen in Nederland, waarbij de beslisvaardigheid onder druk staat. Zij is onderdeel van het multidisciplinaire NWA-ORC consortium STRIDE: 'Op weg naar een nieuwe balans tussen empowerment en bescherming van oudere personen'. Per september 2025 is Roos als postdoctoraal onderzoeker verbonden aan STRIDE.
