Research
My research focuses on the fields of (1) community policing, law enforcement and public health, the emergence and performance of local security networks, and (digital) citizen participation in urban safety programs; (2) positive dynamics of security, faith, and trust in a secular society; (3) social cohesion, democratic citizenship, civil society, and public libraries within the context of polarization, civil unrest, and social discontent; and (4) action research and social practice theory.
Teaching
Van Steden teaches in the master Governance of Security.
