Curriculum Vitae

1976 - 'Doctoraal examen' (c. MA-degree) History at the University of Leiden. Major Ancient history, minors Assyriology and modern history.

 

1986 - PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU University Amsterdam). Disstertation: grondbezit in het Seleucidische Rijk [Land Tenure in the Seleucid Empire]. Promoters: prof. dr. P.W. de Neeve and prof. dr. M. Stol.

 

1974-5 - History teacher at Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet, The Hague.

 

1975-9 - History teacher at Pieter Groen College, Katwijk aan Zee.

 

1976 - Lecturer in Ancient History VU University Amsterdam (1976-9 halftime, afterwards fulltime).

 

1979-84 - Part time lecturer in Ancient History at teacher training college "De Vrije Leergangen" (evening classes).

 

1982 - Initiator of academic discipline "Ancient Civilizations" (Oudheidkunde) at VU University, now BA Oudheidkunde (Ancient Studies) and part of MA Classics and Ancient Civilizations (programs in Classics, Ancient Studies and Ancient History).

 

1993 - Professor of Ancient Mediterranean and West Asian History, VU University Amsterdam.

 

Research

Research interests

Ancient History of the Mediterranean world; The history of the Ancient Near East, in particular the history of Western Asia in the so-called Hellenistic period (Alexander the Great to the first century BC); Economic History and the history of the interaction between Greeks and Babylonians. 

Upcoming publications: edited volume on the Jewish diaspora in the Achaemenid and Hellenistic periods (in Dutch), a monograph on the history of Hellenistic Babylonia, articles on the concept of "polis", Greek religious life in Hellenistic Babylonia, proskynesis, the -m- and -w- sounds in Late Babylonian.
