dr. PR Koster


Assistant Professor, School of Business and Economics, Spatial Economics

Personal information

Paul Koster (1983) works as an assistant professor at the Department of Spatial Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He graduated at this department in Economics in 2007 and obtained his PhD in 2012 on a thesis entitled “The cost of travel time variability for air and car travellers”. He is also affiliated as a research fellow at the Tinbergen Institute.

He was a co-developer of the PVE method (together with Thijs Dekker and Niek Mouter) which provides a survey alternative for CBA assessments.

Research

The main questions driving his research are: What is valuable and how can we measure value? His research focuses on experimental valuation and the regulation of externalities. He is an expert in the design and development of choice experiments and approaches to support public policy decisions that allow for the inclusion of broader values. 

Teaching

He teaches Methods and Techniques for Economic Research (3d year BA Earth, Sustainability and Economics), Applications in Economic Policy (University minor in Economics 3d year Economics BA), Policy Lab (3rd year BA PPE) and supervises theses on the bachelor and master level in several programmes (STREEM, Economics, PPE, AED).
