Nicole van Maanen


Research Associate, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Personal information

Dr Nicole van Maanen is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Water and Climate Risk department at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of VU Amsterdam. She is actively involved in enhancing multi-(hazard-)risk assessment and management through her work in the MYRIAD-EU and EO4Multihazards projects. In addition, she serves as the coordinator for the Responsible Societies Coalition, part of the VU-UT Alliance.

 Nicole’s background is interdisciplinary, combining political science, climate studies, and geography. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Potsdam University and a Master of Science in Climate Studies from Wageningen University & Research. She recently completed her PhD in Geography at Humboldt University of Berlin, where her research focused on developing scenarios for climate change adaptation.

Beyond her PhD research, Nicole worked as a Research Analyst at Climate Analytics, a global climate science and policy institute committed to supporting climate action aligned with the 1.5°C warming limit. She also has research experience from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Columbia University and contributed as an author to the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report.

Climate change, sustainable development, water, agriculture, health, adaptation and adaptive capacity, loss and damage, multi-(hazard-)risk.

2019: MSc Climate Studies. Wageningen University, Netherlands.

2017: BA Political Science. University of Potsdam, Germany.
