dr. Nadia Bloemendaal

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Assistant Professor, Amsterdam Sustainability Institute

Personal information

Nadia Bloemendaal has been working at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) since September 2016. From 2016 - 2021 she conducted her PhD research at this institute, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jeroen Aerts, Dr. Hans de Moel, and Dr. Sanne Muis. Her PhD research is entitled "Weathering the Storm: tropical cyclone risk under climate change" and revolved around increasing our understanding of global-scale tropical cyclone risk in the present and future climate. The fully statistical model STORM was (one of) the direct outcome(s) of this. STORM generates 10.000 years of synthetic tropical cyclone trakcs and is thereby a valuable tool in calculating probabilities at high spatial resolution in any location prone to tropical cyclones.

Nadia successfully defended her PhD thesis on 3 November 2021, and obtained her doctoral degree with Cum Laude distinction. She held a combined postdoctoral position at IVM and Lamont-Doherthy Earth Observatory, Columbia University New York, where she worked on better understanding tropical cyclone risk. Nowadays she works as assistant professor at IVM, and is a climate researcher at KNMI.
