Masha Antokolskaia is full professor of family law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. From 2009 till 2014 and from 2020 till 2026 she is head of the Department of Private Law. Since 2020 she is member of the Academia Europaea. Since 2020 - President of the International Society of Family Law (ISFL). Founder and chair of the Family Law in Europe: Academic Network (FL-EUR), and member of the Expert Group of the Commission on European Family Law (CEFL). Co-founder and Editor-in Chief of the open-access double-blind peer-reviewed journal Family & Law, member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift Familie- en Recht and the Familie & Recht Book Series, member of the editorial- advisory board of the Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht and several other editorial boards.
She is an author of several monographs and more than hundred articles written in Dutch, English and Russian. Her main research areas are: European & Comparative Family Law and Dutch Family Law, with particular regard to the law relating to relationships, divorce & post-divorce parentage and adult protection.
She graduated in law at Moscow State Law Academy and at University of Amsterdam. She was awarded a PhD in Moscow in 1988. From 1989 till 1998 she taught civil and family law at Moscow State Law Academy. In 1993-1995 she was a member of the drafting team of the Russian Family Code. From 1998 until 2005 she was a senior research fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences at the Molengraaff Institute of Private Law, University of Utrecht.
Masha Antokolskaia is hoogleraar privaatrecht, in het bijzonder personen- en familierecht, aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Voorzitter en programmaleider van het Amsterdamse Centrum voor Familie & Recht (ACFL). Sinds 2010 lid van de Academia Europaea. Sinds 2020 President van de International Society of Family Law. Founder en voorzitter van de Family Law in Europe: Academic Network (FL-EUR). Sinds 2001 lid van de Commission on European Family Law (CEFL). Hoofdredeacteur van open-acces tijdschrift Family & Law. Lid van de redactie- adviesraad van het Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht. Lid van de redacties van het Tijdschrift Familie- en Jeugdrecht en van de boekenreeks Familie & Recht (Boom Juridische uitgevers), en andere redacties. Auteur van diverse monografieën en artikelen in het Nederlands, Engels en Russisch. Voornaamste onderzoeksterreinen: Europees, vergelijkend en Nederlands familierecht, Europees privaatrecht, algemene rechtsvergelijking.
Afgestudeerd in de rechtswetenschap aan de Moskou Staatsacademie voor Recht (1986) en de Universiteit van Amsterdam (2000). Gepromoveerd aan de Moskou Staatsacademie voor Recht in 1988 op het proefschrift ‘Onderhoudsverplichtingen’. Van 1989 tot 1998 UD en later UHD rechtsgeleerdheid aan de Moskou Staatsacademie voor Recht. In 1993-1995 lid van de ontwerpcommissie voor het Nieuwe Russische familiewetboek.
Verhuisd naar Nederland in 1995. Van 1998 tot 2005: KNAW Academieonderzoeker aan het Molengraaff Instituut voor Privaatrecht van de Universiteit Utrecht.
