Max J. van Gerrevink is a PhD candidate working on the FireIce project of the Ecosystem and Climate Change research group lead by dr. Sander Veraverbeke. FireIce will investigate feedbacks between climate warming and arctic-boreal fires by studying direct and longer-term carbon emissions from fires. FireIce will acquire highly needed observations of carbon emissions from Siberian forest and tundra fires.
He is actively involved in the IVM-VU Wildfire and drought risk in the Netherlands (2020-2022) framework development study lead by dr. Marleen de Ruiter. In this project we assess: (1) the linkages between drought risk and wildfire risk in the Netherlands and (2) the socio-economic impacts of wildfires in the Netherlands.
This study will be conducted in collaboration with VU Institute for Enviromental studies (VU-IVM), Instituut Fysieke Veiligheid and Vandersat.
As project researcher Max has participated in the interdiscplinary project FireScapes: Towards an interdisciplinary understanding of wildfire risk mitigation in the Dutch landscape.
Current PhD project(s): Integrated Fire Radiative Forcing, Sink to source: Pyrogenic carbon production by boreal fires
