Maurice Kalthof

PhD Candidate, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Personal information

Maurice Kalthof is a PhD candidate in the department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). He followed the bachelor’s Earth Sciences and master’s Earth surface and Water (Geohazards and Earth Observation track) at Utrecht University. During his thesis, he derived surface water malaria predictors from hyper resolution earth observation data to spatially predict continental scale malaria in East Africa. In his internship, he analysed the validity of all regional dike safety standards in the Netherlands.

His PhD research focuses on social and environmental changes due to climate change and extreme floods and droughts. For this, he studies human-natural feedbacks under consecutive floods and droughts with a coupled large-scale hydrological (CWatM) and agent-based model (ABM), simulating the behaviour of farmers, households, reservoir operators and governments in response to the impacts/risk of floods and droughts. His work is jointly executed with GfZ in Germany and IIASA in Austria.

Expertise

Floods & droughts, adaptation, remote sensing.

Education

2022: MSc Earth Surface and Water (cum laude), Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
