Full Professor, School of Business and Economics, Finance

, Tinbergen Institute

Personal information

I am a Professor of Finance at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. The scope of my chair is judgment and decision making. I am affiliated with the Tinbergen Institute as a Research Fellow (TI), and serve as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization (JEBO). I am one of the founders and organizers of the biennial Research in Behavioral Finance Conference (RBFC) series.

I gave my inaugural lecture on September 21, 2017 (in Dutch; video; text; photos).

Research

I work on themes in the fields of financial and behavioral economics. My main research interests are related to judgment and decision making. Most of my research projects are empirical, and use data from unconventional sources such as television game shows, lotteries and sports.

Visit my personal homepage for an overview of my publications.

Teaching

I teach in BSc, MSc, PhD and post-experience programs. Current teaching activities at the Vrije Universiteit:

• Behavioral Finance (field course Tinbergen Institute)
• Behavioral Finance (elective course MSc Finance)
• Behavioral Finance & Real Estate (course minor Real Estate Economics & Finance)
• Judgment & Decision Making lectures in post-experience programs
• Theses

Additionally I am a co-examiner for multiple introductory Finance courses:
• Finance (BSc International Business Administration)
• Finance 1 (BSc Economics and Business Economics)
• Financieel Management 1 (BSc Bedrijfskunde)

Prizes and Awards

In 2016 the Dutch Research Council (NWO) awarded me a Vidi grant worth €800,000 for my proposal "Game show economics: Decision making in high stakes natural experiments." The grant has funded multiple of my research projects that use TV game shows to analyze the economic behavior of people.

In 2011 I received a Top Lecturer Award from the Erasmus School of Economics, and in 2018 students gave me the MSc Finance Lecturer of the Year award.
