Personal information

Martijn Stronks studied law and philosophy at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Cape Town University, South Africa. After his studies he became Editor-in-Chief of the migration law journal Migrantenrecht and its successor Asiel&Migrantenrecht. Between 1 september 2012 and 31 augustus 2016 he wrote a legal and philosophical dissertation on the role of time in European migration law. Since September 2016 he works at the Amsterdam Centre of Migration and Refugee Law (ACMRL) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Since 2025 he is head of ACMRL.

Martijn Stronks studeerde rechten en filosofie. Na zijn studie werd hij hoofdredacteur van het migratierechtelijke vaktijdschrift Migrantenrecht en zijn opvolger Asiel&Migrantenrecht. Tussen 1 september 2012 en 31 augustus 2016 schreef hij een juridisch, filosofisch proefschrift. Per september 2016 is hij verbonden aan het Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law van de VU waar hij sinds 2025 leiding aan geeft.

Research

Martijn Stronks research focusses on two interrelated themes: time and mobility. His dissertation analysed the role of time in European Migration Law, the manuscript that was based on this dissertation appeared in the Cambridge Asylum and Migration Studies Series. Next to his interest in time and (migration) law, he is developing a research agenda argueing that the field of migration law should be broadend to include the field of mobility law. 

Next to academic articles and contribution, Martijn has extensively written for NRC, a Dutch newspaper and regularly contributes to De Groene Amsterdammer, a Dutch weekly.

In 2023 he became member of the Editorial Board of the Netherlands Journal of Legal Philosophy.

Martijn Stronks' onderzoek richt zich op twee samenhangende thema's tijd en mobiliteit. Zijn juridisch en filosofisch promotieonderzoek handelde over het begrip tijd in het Europese migratierecht, het daarop gebaseerde boek verscheen in de Cambridge Asylum and Migration Studies Series. ZIjn recentere onderzoeksagenda poogt het veld van migratierecht te verbreden naar 'mobiliteits recht'. 

Naast academische bijdragen, schrijft Martijn regelmatig voor NRC en De Groene Amsterdammer. In 2023 trad Martijn toe tot de redactie van het Netherlands Journal of Legal Philosophy.
