I obtained my PhD in 2006 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with a dissertation that focused on methods and applications of meta-analysis. From 2006 until 2016 I have been working as a postdoc and senior researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, mainly in the area of environmental and transport economics. As of 2022 I am an Associate Professor of Environmental Economics at the Institute for Environmental Studies, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. My work has three pillars: (1) valuation of and societal payments for ecosystem services and public good provisioning, (2) behaviour and decision making in food production and consumption, (3) assessing effects of environmental economic policies. For this I apply a wide variety of methods, including meta-analysis and value transfer, choice experiments and choice modelling, lab and field experiments, and agent-based modelling. My teaching includes various aspects of environmental economics, environmental valuation and policy instrument design. My teaching revolves around different aspect of environmental economics, my research focuses on environmental and public good economics and bio-economic modelling.
