dr. Marije Schaafsma


Associate Professor, Faculty of Science, Environmental Economics

Personal information

Marije Schaafsma is an Associate Professor and Head of the Environmental Economics department of the IVM. She is specialised in analysing the well-being and welfare effects of ecosystem services changes, using monetary and non-monetary valuation methods, and has a keen interest in deliberative valuation and assessing environmental justice in/through valuation methods. She also works on the integration of environmental factors into poverty statistics. She strongly engages in interdisciplinary research to foster sustainable development.

Marije is a Lead Author on the IPBES values assessment and Coordinating Lead Author on the IPBES Business & Biodiversity Assessment. Marije did her PhD at VU Amsterdam, then moved to the UK (Universities of East Anglia, Cambridge, Southampton), and joined VU Amsterdam again in November 2019. She is a Research Fellow at CSERGE, University of East Anglia, and Visiting Researcher at the University of Southampton. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Policy and subject Editor of Ecology & Society.
