Personal information

Maarten Lindeboom is Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Centre for Health Economics, Monash University, Melbourne Australia. He was the head of the Department of Economics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 2015 – 2024 and the Director of Graduate studies of the Tinbergen Institute from 1998-2003. He is also a council member of the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR, Home | The Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (wrr.nl)) and member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW, Over ons / About us | KHMW). From 2016-2024 he has served as a crown appointed member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER, Home | SER) and has served in policy advise committees, most recently on the future of the Dutch Disability Insurance program (OCTAS, Onafhankelijke Commissie Toekomst Arbeidsongeschiktheidsstelsel (Octas) | Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid | Rijksoverheid.nl). Lindeboom is a research fellow of the Tinbergen Institute and IZA and Lindeboom holds various positions in advisory boards of international research institutes. He is an emeritus editor of the Journal of Health Economics (2016-2024) and emeritus associate editor of Health Economics (2008-2015) and held longer term visiting positions at the University of Michigan (2004/5) and the University of Bristol (2002). 

 

Research

His research interests are in the field of Health, Labor and Demography, in particular issues related to Early life conditions human capital formation and later life health outcomes; Health, Income and Work across the life cycle; Mental Health and Economic Decision Making. Among others he has published in leading journals such as  American Economic Review; the Journal of Economic Perspectives; Review of Economics and Statistics; Journal of the European Economic Association;  the Economic Journal;  Journal of Labor Economics; Journal of Human Resources; Demography; Journal of Public Economics; Journal of Health EconomicsJournal of Applied Econometrics;  Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A and Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B.
