Personal information

Maša Galič is an Assistant Professor of Privacy and Criminal (Procedure) Law at the Criminal law and criminology department of the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam. Prior to this, she was a researcher at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society (TILT; Tilburg University). Maša obtained her PhD in 2019 at TILT on the topic of privacy and surveillance in public space, using the example of the ‘Stratumseind Living Lab’ in Eindhoven. In 2014, she obtained a master's degree (summa cum laude) in Law & Technology from Tilburg University. She has a graduate degree in law (bachelor and master's degree) from the Law Faculty in Ljubljana (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia).

Maša is also a member of the Amsterdam Law and Technology Institute (ALTI) and an affiliate of the Dutch Police Lab AI.

Research

Maša's current research focuses on the regulation of digital investigation powers of the police, which function at the intersection of criminal procedure law and data protection law. Her other research interests concern cybercrime, privacy, surveillance and smart cities. During her PhD and as a postdoctoral researcher she was involved in the 'Privacy protection in the 21st century' project of prof. Bert-Jaap Koops (NWO VICI grant), finding new legal and conceptual paradigms to protect citizens in the age of ubiquitous data. Maša was also involved in several research projects (H2020, NWO, WODC), including leading a project for the WODC in 2019-20 on privacy risks stemming from the use of hobby drones and spy products between citizens and possibilities for regulation.

Prizes and Awards

The Dutch Association for Intellectual Propery (VIE) prize by the Vereniging voor Intellectuele Eigendom (VIE / AIPPI Nederland), March 2016

Awarded to my article, 'The legality of resale of digital content after UsedSoft in subsequent German and CJEU case law',  published in the EIPR in 2015.

The VIE-prize is an annual prize granted by the Dutch Association for Intellectual Property (VIE, part of AIPPI - l’ Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle) to a publication in the field of Intellectual Property. The VIE-eligible publication, in Dutch or English, needs to make a significant and/or innovative contribution to the knowledge and understanding of intellectual property rights in the Netherlands by an author not older than 35 years at the time of publication. The VIE-jury consisting of experts in the field of IP and € 2,500 are awarded to the author.
