drs. Loes Verkuil, MSc

PhD Candidate, Faculty of Science, Environmental Geography

Personal information

Loes Verkuil is a PhD Candidate at the Environmental Geography department at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). Her research focuses on the emergence of environmental ‘bright spots’ in the Netherlands, agricultural systems that have relatively lower environmental pressure and can contribute to climate-smart solutions. By identifying and mapping these bright spots, the emergence and effective application of future proof food systems can be better understood. This research is part of the BrightSpotsCSA project, geographically focusing on the Netherlands and Punjab, India.

Loes obtained a Bachelor degree in biology at Utrecht University, and continued with a Master degree in Environmental Biology, focusing on ecology and natural resources management. Before joining VU, Loes worked as a junior researcher at the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development in Utrecht. Working for the CCAFS research program, she was involved in applying foresight and spatial analysis as policy tools for integration of climate action into agricultural development plans in Laos.
