Lilian Welling-Steffens (Haren (Gr), 25 May 1967) graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1992 in both Dutch law and public international law. In 1993 she joined Leiden University as a PhD student. In April 1997 she defended her doctoral dissertation "Transfer of claims and debts in Dutch international private law".
From 1997 through to 2006 she worked as a lawyer in the Banking & Finance practice group of Loyens & Loeff.
From 2004 through to 2007 she was an Associate Professor at the department of private law at the University of Amsterdam, lecturing and doing research in the field of Insolvency law, Property law and Private International Law. From 2007-2024 she remained an affiliated lecturer at the University of Amsterdam.
In 2005, she designed and taught the course International Commercial Law in the Commercial Law Master at the Law Faculty of the Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
From 2009-2011 she was director of the Centre for Legal Studies and associate professor of law at the Catholic University of Malawi and from 2012-2015 she was associate professor of commercial law at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi.
Between September 2015 and 2018, she was a guest lecturer and coordinator of the course Property and Insolvency Law for the Zuid-As Master's programme of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Between 2016-2021, she was also a guest lecturer in Private International Law at Leiden University.
In 2017 she graduated cum laude for Grotius/Insolad and she regularly facilitates courses for Grotius Financing & Security Rights programme.
Before joining the VU in September 2024, she worked (between September 2015-September 2024) as a practicing lawyer for the following law firms: Loyens & Loeff, Greenberg Traurig and bureau Brandeis (respectively), while continuing her affiliation with the department of private law at the University of Amsterdam.
Lilian Welling-Steffens (Haren (Gr), 25 mei 1967) studeerde in 1992 af aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam in zowel Nederlands recht als internationaal publiekrecht. In 1993 trad ze in dienst bij de Universiteit Leiden als AIO. In april 1997 verdedigde zij haar proefschrift "De overgang van vorderingen en schulden in het Nederlands international privaat recht".
Van 1997 tot en met 2006 was zij werkzaam als advocaat binnen de praktijkgroep Banking & Finance van Loyens & Loeff.
Van 2004-2007 was zij als universitair hoofddocent verbonden aan de afdeling privaatrecht van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, waar zij doceerde en onderzoek deed op het gebied van het insolventierecht, goederenrecht en internationaal privaatrecht. Tussen 2007-2024 bleef zij als gastdocent verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
In 2005 heeft ze het vak International Commercial Law ontwikkeld en gedoceerd in de Master Commercial Law aan de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Universiteit van Addis Abeba, Ethiopië.
Van 2009-2011 was zij directeur van het Centre for Legal Studies en associate professor rechten aan de Catholic University of Malawi en van 2012-2015 was zij associate professor commercial law aan Chancellor College van de University of Malawi.
Tussen september 2015 en 2018 was ze gastdocent en coördinator van het vak Goederen- en Insolventierecht voor de masteropleiding Ondernemingsrecht aan de Zuid-as van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Tussen 2016-2021 was zij ook gastdocent Internationaal Privaatrecht aan de Universiteit Leiden.
In 2017 slaagde ze cum laude voor de opleiding Grotius/Insolad en ze treedt regelmatig op als docent in de Grotius opleiding Financiering & Zekerheden.
Voordat zij in september 2024 bij de VU in dienst trad werkte zij, tussen september 2015-september 2024, als advocaat bij de volgende advocatenkantoren: respectievelijk Loyens & Loeff, Greenberg Traurig en bureau Brandeis, terwijl zij verbonden bleef aan de afdeling privaatrecht van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
