Lieneke Slingenberg is Professor of Migrants and the Rule of Law at the Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law (ACMRL) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She studies the regulation of migrants' lives from the perspective of the rule of law. She studies how law is both a governmental instrument to shape migrants’ lives (‘rule by law’) and an important limit on governmental power (‘rule of law’). In 2018 she was a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS-KNAW) and she currently is a visiting professor at the College of Europe. In 2022, she was appointed full professor at a VU University Research Chair. Her PhD (2012, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) was on the reception of asylum seekers under international law.
Lieneke was head of the ACMRL from May 2015 until September 2021 and of the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law from January 2016 until January 2018. Since January 2024 she has been vice dean of research in the faculty board.
