- I am Director of the Centre for Global English. The Centre for Global English is based at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and consistst of a network connecting researchers, students, teachers and learners of English around the world. Together we study, define, tackle and advise on some of the most pressing linguistic and societal that are related to the world-wide use of English.
- I am the creator of the online course MOOC English Pronunciation in a Global World: In this course, you'll find out which pronunciation featires are important for mutual understanding. In exercises and videos, you will practise sounds and stresses, and learn about other learners' accents.

My research interests are in:
- language variation and change; grammatical properties of varieties of English;
- English pronunciation, in the context of English as a Lingua Franca;
- the interface between grammar and discourse pragmatics.
I currently teach BA and MA courses in Global English, Postcolonial Language and Literature, English Text Analysis, International Communication, English Pronunciation, and Language Culture and Variation.
My MOOC English Pronunciation in a Global World runs on the platform FutureLearn.
I also give courses and individual trainings English Pronunication for the VU Centre for Global English and the Academic Language Programme. Previous participants include: academic and support staff at institutions of higher education, PhD-students, the Dutch military and private companies. The tools that I use for my Pronunciation teaching can be freely accessed on this website English Pronunciation.
In 2002 I was awarded the VU Teaching Award for my teaching.
