Biography

Jos J. de Koning Ph.D., FACSM, (1963) is a Dutch Associate Professor at the Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (USA). His research interests range from biomechanical modeling to high performance exercise physiology. De Koning is internationally recognized for his research in the following areas: 1) pacing strategies in a range of activities; 2) monitoring training loads; 3) elite sports performance physiology and biomechanics; 4) biomechanics and physiology of speed skating. He has authored more than 150 original research and review articles and presented at 80 international conferences with keynote lectures at the ISB, IOC World Congress, ECSS and ACSM meetings. De Koning is a Fellow of the American College of Sport Medicine and was from 2019-2022 chair of the International Relations Committee of the ACSM. He was from 2017-2022 the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance (IF 4.21) and served on the Editorial Board for four other international journals. He pioneered in the development and implementation of the innovative and world records producing ‘klapskate’ in competitive speed skating and was recipient of research grants from the International Olympic Committee to conduct studies at three Winter Olympic Games. De Koning is teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in exercise physiology and performance modeling.
