Dr. Joen Luirink completed his PhD thesis on Structure and function of the pCloDF13 encoded Bacteriocin Release Protein at VU University Amsterdam in 1989. Thereafter, he became associate professor in the Molecular Microbiology research group, developing his own research line on Molecular cell biology of pro- and eukaryotes. In 1991 and 1992, Luirink worked as a visiting scientist in the Cell Biology Program in Heidelberg (Germany) with professor B. Dobberstein.
Since 2008, he is consultant and member of the advisory board of Xbrane Bioscience. In 2013, he became Chief Scientific Officer of Abera Bioscience, a Stockholm based biotechnology company focused on developing innovative vaccines and vaccine development technologies. Luirink’s research interests lie in protein trafficking in (pathogenic) bacteria, biogenesis of membrane proteins, bacterial protein production platforms and vaccine development.
