dr. Jara Tabitha Hees, MSc

Research Associate, Faculty of Science, Functional Genomics

Research Associate, Amsterdam Neuroscience, Amsterdam Neuroscience - Cellular & Molecular Mechanisms

Research

Jara Tabitha Hees is a neurobiologist and postdoctoral researcher in the Koppers Group within the Department of Functional Genomics (FGA) at the Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research (CNCR), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research interests center on how neurons manage the logistical challenge of supplying proteins to their furthest extensions. Specifically, she studies the cellular mechanisms regulating mRNA transport and local protein synthesis.

Using a combination of advanced live-cell imaging, proximity proteomics, and RNA sequencing, Hees explores how dynamic structures inside the neuron cooperate to coordinate these processes. Supported by a Veni grant from NWO (Dutch Research Council), her current work focuses on how contact points between the endoplasmic reticulum and the cytoskeleton act as control hubs for translation. A key goal of this research is to uncover how the disruption of these cellular mechanisms contributes to neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
