Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Criminology

Assistant Professor, A-LAB

Assistant Professor, Research Programmes - Law, Empirical and Normative Studies

Personal information

I joined the department of Criminology of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in February 2019. From 2014 – 2019 I was a Lecturer and later a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Cardiff University. Prior to that, I was employed as a lecturer and researcher at the department of Criminal Law and Criminology of VU University.

From August 2009 until August 2013 I worked as a PhD student at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) and the department of Criminal Law and Criminology of Vrije  Universiteit Amsterdam. My PhD thesis focused on the longitudinal association between employment and crime in a sample of high-risk youths.

I obtained a bachelor degree in developmental psychology, and a bachelor and master degree in criminology.

Academic positions

  • 2019-present:  Assistant Professor in Criminology at the department of Criminology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands
  • 2018-2019: Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University, United Kingdom
  • 2014-2018: Lecturer in Criminology at the School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University, United Kingdom
  • 2013-2014: Lecturer and researcher at the department of Criminal Law and Criminology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands
  • 2009-2013: PhD student at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) and the department of Criminal Law and Criminology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands
  • 2009: Research assistant at the Faculty of Psychology and Education, Department of Clinical Child and Family Studies, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands

My research interests include:

  • intimate partner violence
  • stalking
  • child sexual exploitation
  • life course criminology
  • desistance

Projects:

  • I have completed a two-year ESRC funded project (Future Research Leaders award) aimed at integrating the study of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration within life-course criminology. The project investigated the relationship between the development of general offending and the development of IPV perpetration, and examined factors associated with desistance from IPV perpetration.
  • I have contributed to a two-year project funded by Welsh Government (PI: Dr Sophie Hallett), aimed at analysing outcomes of young people at risk of sexual exploitation.
  • My PhD thesis focused on the relationship between employment and crime in a sample of high-risk youths. Using longitudinal data on a sample of previously institutionalized youths, I studied the effects of employment on crime, the effects of a criminal record on employment outcomes, and life course outcomes of high-risk youths in general.

Teaching

I am coordinator of the master Criminology as well as thesis coordinator. I have developed two courses for the new Law in Society bachelor programme. I am currently coordinating and teaching two Law in Society courses: Criminology (year 1) and Qualitative research methods (year 2).
