Janina Smaoui is a researcher at the Environmental Policy Analysis department of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam.
She has a background in Environment and Resource Management from VU Amsterdam and International Relations from the University of Erfurt. In her MSc thesis, she investigated the governance landscape of international cooperative initiatives for saline agriculture in Asia. Especially, she looked at the potential of these initiatives to contribute to and enhance food security in Southeast, Central and South Asia.
In her current position, Janina is working on a project on salinity in Africa, involving 11 countries in the sub-Saharan region. It addresses the research area of food security under climate change impacts through saline agriculture. Janina also supports the Bio* III project, which focuses on biodiversity governance through initiatives and partnerships.
