Jacqueline Broerse is professor of innovation and communication in the health & life sciences, and a leading expert in food system transformations. With a focus on diversity and social inclusion, she develops methodologies to facilitate public engagement in research and innovation processes, aiming to bridge the gap between academia and society. As director of the Athena Institute for transdisciplinary research at VU Amsterdam, Jacqueline is at the forefront of sustainable and inclusive change. Her current research is dedicated to:
- Methodologies for multi-stakeholder research and innovation processes: Jacqueline is an expert in designing approaches that facilitate knowledge co-creation and joint reflection.
- Governance of system transformation: Jacqueline is committed to promoting open and equitable system transformations, to foster broader societal inclusion and drive sustainability transitions.

Background
Jacqueline earned her master's degree in biomedical sciences with honours in 1988. After graduation she worked two years as a policy maker on biotechnology at the Directorate General International Cooperation, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1998, she obtained her PhD degree, by developing an interactive approach to involve small-scale farmers in agenda setting for agricultural biotechnology research. Since then, she has pursued her mission to include diverse perspectives in research and innovation and with that, bridge the gap between science and society.
