Personal information

Jacqueline Broerse is professor of innovation and communication in the health & life sciences, and a leading expert in food system transformations. With a focus on diversity and social inclusion, she develops methodologies to facilitate public engagement in research and innovation processes, aiming to bridge the gap between academia and society. As director of the Athena Institute for transdisciplinary research at VU Amsterdam, Jacqueline is at the forefront of sustainable and inclusive change. Her current research is dedicated to:

  • Methodologies for multi-stakeholder research and innovation processes: Jacqueline is an expert in designing approaches that facilitate knowledge co-creation and joint reflection.
  • Governance of system transformation: Jacqueline is committed to promoting open and equitable system transformations, to foster broader societal inclusion and drive sustainability transitions.

EU projects on Food System Transformation

  • FIT4FOOD2030 project coordinator (2017-2020)
    This EU-funded project enhanced research and innovation to create more sustainable, resilient, responsible, competitive, and inclusive European food systems. The project co-created methods and tools through collaboration with food system actors, providing valuable resources for sustainable food system transformation.
  • FoodCLIC project coordinator (2022-2027)
    This EU-funded project develops integrated urban food policies to ensure the availability and consumption of healthy, affordable, safe, and sustainably produced food.
  • CLEVERFOOD work package leader (2023-2027)
    This EU-funded project creates European networks of food system transformation projects, actors and Living Labs, fostering collaboration and mutual learning.

Background

Jacqueline earned her master's degree in biomedical sciences with honours in 1988. After graduation she worked two years as a policy maker on biotechnology at the Directorate General International Cooperation, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1998, she obtained her PhD degree, by developing an interactive approach to involve small-scale farmers in agenda setting for agricultural biotechnology research. Since then, she has pursued her mission to include diverse perspectives in research and innovation and with that, bridge the gap between science and society.
