mr. Huazhi Li

Research Associate, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Personal information

Huazhi Li is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Water and Climate Risk at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). He is currently involved in the INSUREAPAPT project, where he works on developing a multi-hazard risk framework that can capture interdependencies between windstorms, riverine, and coastal flooding for Europe. This framework is expected to consider future climate scenarios and adaptation measures across different hazards.

In 2026, Huazhi completed his doctoral dissertation titled Connected Extremes: Capturing dependnece in global-scale flood risk assessments. Throughout his PhD, he applied a multivariate statistical model to develop a global synthetic dataset of extreme sea level events with realistic dependnece structures. This dataset was used to assess coastal flood risk at the global scale, in order to provide better risk estimates. He also looked into the spatial correlation of compound flooding along major U.S. coastlines. Huazhi holds a BSc. degree in Harbour, Waterway, and Coastal Engineering from Hohai University (China) and a MSc. degree in Earth Sciences from Utrecht University (The Netherlands).
