mr. Huazhi Li

Research Associate, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Personal information

Huazhi Li is a PhD candidate in the Department of Water and Climate Risk at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), beginning in September 2020. He earned his Master’s degree from Utrecht Universiteit in Earth Sciences with a focus on Coastal Dynamics and Fluvial Systems. In the final year of his master’s study, Huazhi worked as a research intern in the department of Flood Risk Management at Deltares. During this period, he developed a broad interest in flood risk management and gained extensive experiences with hydrological and hydraulic modelling, flood risk modelling and assessment, and climate change adaptation.

Currently, Huazhi is working on his PhD project, funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC), concerning spatial dependence of flood events at the global scale. This research aims at improving our understanding of spatial dependence of flood events and how this dependence structure can influence flood risk and adaptation assessments at the global scale. Subsequently, he will develop a new methodological framework to model and assess the spatial dependence through an event-based multivariate extreme value approach.

Expertise

Flood Risk Modelling, Flood Risk Assessment, Climate Change Adaptation, Spatial and Statistical Analysis, Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways.
