prof. dr. Hans Boutellier

Personal information

Hans Boutellier (1953) is bijzonder hoogleraar Polarisatie & Veerkracht op basis van gastvrijheid. Hij was directeur van het Verwey-Jonker Instituut van 2003 tot 2019. Boutellier heeft sinds 2004 diverse leerstoelen bekleed op het terrein van veiligheid en samenleving, meest recent met de leeropdracht Veiligheid & Veerkracht. Boutellier was onder andere lid van de Raad van advies van de Politieacademie en voorzitter van de Commissie Justitiële Interventies. Hij werd koninklijk onderscheiden (officier in de orde van Oranje Nassau) vanwege zijn bijdrage wetenschap, beleid en samenleving.

Hans Boutellier is endowed professor Polarisation & Resilience. He was director of the Verwey-Jonker Instituut in Utrecht from 2003 till 2019. Boutellier occupied several chairs on the subject of security and society, most recently on Security and resilience  (Veiligheid & Veerkracht). Among others Boutellier was a member of the Advisory Board of the Dutch Police Academy (Politieacademie) and the chair of the Commission of Judicial Interventions (Commissie Justitiële Interventies) and has been editor in chief and chair or member of the editorial board of several journals.

Research

Boutellier studeerde in 1980 af als sociaalpsycholoog op jeugdcriminaliteit en houdt zich sindsdien bezig met maatschappelijke thema’s als sociale orde, openbaar bestuur, veiligheid en leefbaarheid, (jeugd)criminaliteit en strafrecht. Over deze onderwerpen schreef hij, zowel wetenschappelijk als populair, honderden publicaties, waaronder vier boeken (die ook in het Engels en Frans werden uitgegeven). Zijn meest recente boek is Het nieuwe Westen. Over identiteitspolitiek en polarisatie (Van Gennep, 2021). Bij Bristol University Press publiceerde hij een integratief overzicht van zijn werk in A criminology of Moral Order (2019).

Boutellier graduated in 1980 in social psychology on the topic of youth crime. Since then he studied and published on themes as social order, crime and safety, security and criminal law. He wrote about two hundred publications, among which four monographies in Dutch, which were translated in English and French. His most recent book in English is an integrating overview of his work, which is published at Bristol University Press: A Criminology of Moral Order (2019)
