dr. Guido Löhr

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Reasoning and Argumentation

Personal information

I'm an Assistant Professor of Logic and AI at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Before joining the philosophy department in Amsterdam, I was a postdoc at Radboud University in Nijmegen and Eindhoven University of Technology. In Eindhoven, I was part of the research consortium Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies (Esdit).

I received my (joint) PhD in philosophy (2020) from Ruhr University Bochum and École Normale Supérieure, Paris (Institut Jean Nicod). I hold master's degrees in philosophy (Humboldt University Berlin) and cognitive science (Berlin School of Mind and Brain). As a student, I spent one year at UC Berkeley and two terms at University College London.

With Vincent Müller, I edit the journal Philosophy of AI and organize the Society for the Philosophy of AI.

Research

My work deals with methodological questions: How can we do philosophy? How can we answer questions like "Can AI reason", "Can AI think?." I defend what can be described as a kind of Analytic Romantic Pragmatism with a strong Anti-Philosophy leaning. Overall, I believe that philosophy is a kind of normative conceptual engineering.

Teaching

I mainly teach philosophy of science, logic, ethics of AI, and pragmatism.
