Personal information

Geertje Tijsma is a post-doctoral researcher at the Athena Institute, VU University Amsterdam focused on co-creating knowledge that bridges science and society. In her PhD dissertation, ‘Embedding Engaged Education; Creating Knowledge Together’, she explores how to institutionalize engagement in higher education. Currently, her research focusses on integrating insights from various disciplines as well as experiential knowledge through creative (including art-based) practices.

She holds a master in Neuroscience and with that, expertise in quantitative data analysis. However, after her Major Science Communication in 2018 she has mainly been focussing on qualitative data analysis. She believes in action-oriented, collaborative and transformative research and enjoys working with diverse teams.

Geertje is involved in various courses. She coordinates the bachelor courses community-based health interventions and welzijn in de wijk as well as the master course iCSL1: defining challenges in a multistakeholder context. iCSL 1 is an elective course open to all maters students of the VU and explores co-agenda setting through transdisciplinary research. She has also been responsible for various master internships at Athena.
