mr. Francesca Anzovino

Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Criminal Law

Personal information

Francesca Anzovino is researcher/lecturer at the Department of Criminal Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is currently writing her PhD consisting of a mixed-methods study into the principle of (mutual) trust in international cooperation in criminal law.

Before joining the Vrije Universiteit, Francesca worked as an associate legal officer for the Office of Public Counsel for the Defence of the International Criminal Court and as a Case Manager on defence teams before the same court.

Research

Francesca’s research interests and publications concern the fields of international criminal law as practised before the international criminal courts and tribunals (such as the International Criminal Court), international cooperation in criminal law both within the European Union and outside and human rights law.

What particularly appeals to her is the tension that often arises between different fields of law and the influence of state policy in international cooperation in criminal law. This also forms a part of her PhD research into the principle of (mutual) trust in international cooperation in criminal law specifically from a Dutch perspective. In her research Francesca focuses on for instance extradition and surrender procedures from the Netherlands to states that have questionable human rights reputations.

Teaching

Francesca teaches in several master and bachelor programmes such as the International Crimes Conflict and Criminology Master and the Law in Society Bachelor and supervises theses. She is also a member of the Law in Society programme committee.
