Eric Pels graduated in economics at VU Amsterdam in 1994. He worked as a junior researcher at the Economics and Social Institute in 1994, and as a junior researcher at the department of Spatial Economics. From 1996 to 2000, he worked as an assistant researcher at the department of Spatial Economics and the Tinbergen Institute. In that period, he finished his dissertation entitled "Airport economics and policy: efficiency, competition, and interaction with airlines". Since then, he was a post-doc researcher and assistant professor. He currently has a position as associate professor at the department of Spatial Economics.
