dr. Emile van Krieken

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science, Artificial intelligence

Assistant Professor, Network Institute

Assistant Professor, Research Programmes - Science, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

Personal information

I am an assistant professor in the Learning and Reasoning group at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Before this position, I obtained a PhD with distinction (cum laude) in Artificial Intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2024, which was awarded with the BNVKI dissertation award. I also worked as a postdoc at the University of Edinburgh from 2023 to 2025 and at VU from 2025 to 2026.

I work on machine learning an artificial intelligence, and particularly focus on “neurosymbolic machine learning”. This field aims to learn models that use neurosymbolic representations, involving both embeddings from deep learning and symbolic representations, such as programs and concepts. My work focuses on the fundamental understanding of such combinations, including optimisation properties, characterisations of expressiveness, use of background knowledge, and scalability. Currently, I am particularly interested in methods for neurosymbolic learning in generative AI models like LLMs and diffusion models, in world models, and in commonsense reasoning in visual domains.
