dr. ir. Maryam Karimi Mamaghan


Assistant Professor, School of Business and Economics, Operations Analytics

Personal information

Maryam Karimi Mamaghan is a tenured Assistant Professor of Operations Management and Machine Learning in the department of Operations Analytics at VU Amsterdam. Maryam obtained her PhD in Computer Science, with a specialization in Operations Research, from IMT Atlantique, France, in 2022. Her interdisciplinary expertise lies in addressing complex optimization problems, especially in healthcare, through algorithmic and analytical tools.

Research

Maryam’s research focuses on developing intelligent decision-support methods for healthcare operations. In doing so, she leverages tools from operations research and machine learning to target key challenges in healthcare, such as resource scarcity, operational uncertainty, patient flow, and the need for more personalized and efficient care delivery. Her work is strongly application-driven and involves active collaboration with hospitals, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders to design methods that respond to real operational needs.

Teaching

Maryam teaches across bachelor’s, (research) master’s, and executive education levels. Her teaching profile focuses on operations research, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. In her teaching, she helps students understand how analytical and AI-based methods can be used to solve real optimization problems. She obtained her University Teaching Qualification, BKO, in May 2024.
