Personal information

Chantal van den Berg is Assistant Professor at the Criminal Law and Criminology department. She obtained her BSc and MSc in Criminology at the VU Amsterdam. She worked at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) as a junior researcher and data manager. In 2012 she started as a PhD student at the Criminology department of the VU Amsterdam. In September 2015, she obtained her PhD, which entailed the study of long term criminal careers of juvenile sex offenders and their transition into adulthood, in terms of labor market outcomes, romantic relationships and parenthood. Chantal teaches Victimology in the BSc Criminology and (advanced) statistical courses in the BSc Criminology and MSc Criminology Research Talent Track. 

From 2017 to 2021 she was chair of the Programme Committee (OLC) Criminology. She is currently a member of the Examination Board of the Faculty of Law. 

Research

Chantal conducts research in the programme Empirical and normative studies. Her current research builds on her dissertation and involves (juvenile) sexual offending and sexual victimisation. Her other research interest include labour market opportunities and discrimination, victimization of sexual violence, risk assessment for (sexual) offending and collateral consequences of criminal conviction (specifically the Certificate of conduct – VOG). Chantal has an interest in new and advanced research methods and statistics, which she implements in her research.

Chantal co-supervises the PhD projects of Marleen Gorissen on public online disclosure of sexual victimisation and Nora van Buitenen on using network analysis to understand co-morbidity in mental disorders for a sample of mentally ill prisoners.

Chantal is program leader of the research group on victimization at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR)
