Bert Steens is Full professor of Management Accounting & Control and director of the Executive Master of Finance & Control program and the CFO program of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). He regularly advises businesses on management accounting and control issues, which increasingly involves the application of finance analytics. His industry experience comes from his roles as a partner of EY (1999 – 2001 and 2005 – 2018) and vice president of Capgemini (Cap Gemini Ernst & Young). He is a qualified econometrician (MSc Erasmus University Rotterdam EUR), chartered controller (‘RC’, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) and Master of Change Management (SIOO Utrecht), and he holds a PhD for his research on the role of transfer pricing in economic value creation.

Research areas include transfer pricing, cost accounting, finance function competencies, and AI for sustainability performance management.
Teaching
On the Executive Master’s program, Bert teaches the courses Investment Appraisal & Business Valuation, Management Accounting and Data Analytics applications in Management Accounting, and he supervises research based on data-analytics. On the CFO program Bert leads the module 'Driving Strategy to Success', which covers strategy realization, performance management, ESG and digitalization impacts on performance management.
