Personal information

Bep Schrammeijer is an Assistant Professor at the Athena Institute. Bep conducts transdisciplinary research into human-nature interactions and how we can monitor and inform the transformation to a social-ecologically sustainable future. Bep is involved with several projects on sustainable transitions in agri-food systems. She is interested in plural valuation, integrating local knowledge and socio-ecological traits to better understand land use transitions.

Bep completed her PhD in the Environmental Geography department of the IVM where her research focused on measuring functional quality of urban green space in such a way that subjective values can be included. She also worked on modelling land use change globally where she was trying to discover the effects of different potential future social, political and environmental aspects on our global landscape.

Prior to joining the VU, and during her master study, Bep was applying down to earth land use principles on a small-scale organic farm. Before moving to the Netherlands, Bep was environmental consultant at, and then manager of, an environmental consultancy in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. There her work revolved around mapping invasive plants and developing strategies and providing advice regarding their management.
