Personal information

Beatriz E. Mayans Hermida is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Law at VU Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR.) She is a Mexican lawyer specialized in international human rights law and international criminal law and holds an LLM in International Legal Studies from NYU School of Law. Before her PhD, Beatriz litigated a wide range of human rights cases in Mexico as a lawyer in the Public Interest Clinic of the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE). She previously worked as a monitor of immigration issues at the Mexican National Commission for Human Rights. In addition, Beatriz has also done traineeships in international organizations and tribunals, such as the International Criminal Court, the International Bar Association and the European Center for Constitutionaland Human Rights (ECCHR).

Research
Beatriz E. Mayans Hermida conducts research focusing on the principle of complementarity of International Criminal Court and on punishment and alternative criminal sanctions for international crimes in transitional justice contexts. Specifically, she conducts a case study on the 2016 Final Peace Agreement signed between the Colombian Government and the former guerrilla group FARC-EP.
