Bas Becker is a postdoctoral researcher in the Organization Sciences department and at the Talma Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research explores the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), clinical decision-making, and the organization of healthcare. His research examines how AI systems reshape epistemic authority and professional relationships within medical practice. He conducts collaborative ethnographic studies in intensive care units, long-term care facilities, physical therapy and urological oncology departments. In these settings, he investigates how healthcare professionals interpret, endorse, challenge, reframe, and contest algorithmic outputs and quantification practices in their daily decision-making and collaboration. This work traces the subtle shifts in judgment, workflow, and routines that arise when technology becomes part of care delivery. By combining close empirical observations with theoretical analysis, he shows how the adoption of AI reconfigures decision-making logics, professional relationships, and the situated reasoning of healthcare professionals. This sociotechnical approach contributes to the development of clinical technologies that are more responsive to the practices, values, and ethical commitments of healthcare professionals and patients.
