Personal information

Bart van den Boom Msc (FEWEB, Development Economics) is a research associate at the Amsterdam Centre for World Food Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He obtained a MSc in econometrics from Tilburg University in 1986 and has been affiliated with the VU since 1987. His research interest focuses on the food security-nutrition-poverty nexus. In his research he prefers to work closely with co-authors from developing countries, see publications below. His has extensive knowledge of and experience with general-equilibrium models (both CGE and AGE-type). Specifically, he developed an applied-general-equilibrium / social-welfare model that has been used for policy simulations in Ghana. Outcomes highlight the challenges of the North-South divide in the country, the risks of the accumulation of FDI & external debt, and the role of aid and non-aid policies of the European Union.  Throughout his career Van den Boom has blended research activities with training, capacity building and consultancies. He has a broad experience in various developing countries, mostly in Africa, especially in Ghana and Mozambique, but also in Asia, especially China and Indonesia.  As regards his recent training activities, Van den Boom has successfully implemented a tailor-made training project on food markets for the Ministry of Trade in Indonesia and is currently coordinating another training on free-trade-agreements for that Ministry. He also leads a training on spatial assessment of poverty and food security in Mozambique.
