Andrea Mudd

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Sociology

Assistant Professor, Research Programmes - Social Sciences, The Social Context of Aging (SoCA)

Personal information

Andrea Mudd is an Assistant Professor at the department of Sociology, affiliated with the 'Social Context of Aging' research group.

Research

Andrea's research aims to understand how groups and individuals navigate the complex worlds they inhabit when it comes to the structural inequalities they face, their ability to act in ways they find meaningful, their health, and their health-related behavior. She is particularly interested in the roles of power and agency in how people live their lives, embedded in the physical, social, and societal structures they are subject to.

In her research, Andrea leverages both quantitative and qualitative methods to gain a deeper understanding of the complex systems underlying socioeconomic inequalities (so far, with a focus on Western high-income countries). These methods include analyzing large longitudinal datasets, synthesizing existing literature, extensive discussions with local stakeholders, and in-depth interviews with members of the population about lived experiences with socioeconomic insecurity. She has also modeled (quantitatively) the cost of health interventions per unit of benefit to people’s health, for a broad range of interventions in several different healthcare systems.

Currently, Andrea studies relationships between resources and well-being in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA).

Teaching

Andrea supervises bachelor thesis students writing about the determinants of socioeconomic inequalities in health. She is involved in courses related to social inequality and quantitative research methods.
