dr. Ana-Maria-Roxana Petrescu

Visiting Fellow, Faculty of Science, Earth and Climate

Personal information

Roxana Petrescu is a senior environmental researcher specialised on emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). At the VU Amsterdam she is part of the Earth and Climate Cluster research team. She was/is working for EU funded projects such as: VERIFY, CoCO2 and AVENGERS.

Her work is dealing with reconciliation and assessment of different models and tools leading to verification of GHG inventories by synthesising observation-based estimates of GHG fluxes from bottom-up (emission inventory data, process-based model results, data-driven sector model results), top-down (inversion-based estimates) and global emissions databases (e.g. EDGAR, FAOSTAT). This work is done in close collaboration with national reporting agencies and informs them, as well as third parties, on existing procedures which can be potentially used to verify national level UNFCCC reported emission inventories with other scientific estimates. The final aim is to develop an operational tool used by agencies to complement their official UNFCCC GHG estimates with atmospheric-based estimates.

She has a background diploma in environmental engineering and a PhD in environmental sciences/hydrology. She has more than 15 years of environmental research experience related to emissions of GHGs (CO2, CH4 and partly N2O). Roxana’s main expertise is modelling of CH4 emissions from natural wetlands with interests in other sectors as well (e.g. forestry and agriculture).

Roxana Petrescu’s work on data review and analysis is well represented by her scientific publications. She is trained in reporting and presenting her results to a broad audience having different backgrounds e.g. scientists, policy makers and stakeholders.
