Personal information

Alice de Boer (1966) is Professor of an endowed chair in Social Inequality and Informal Help at the Faculty of Social Sciences at VU University Amsterdam. She is senior researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Social Research in The Hague. She is also a member of Eurocarers (the European organization working for carers) and an ambassador of JMZPro (the Dutch network organization of professionals for young carers).

Research

Her research interests are on informal care giving by different social groups. Her research is largely embedded in the SCP, with different representative studies on non-paid help giving in the Netherlands. Publications include well-being and school outcomes of young carers, gender issues in informal care and paid work, positive and negative evaluation of caregiving. Additional topics concern the collaboration between formal and informal caregivers of community-dwelling. Another research project focuses on how ICT influences social contacts and wellbeing of older people.

Education

She obtained a degree in Household Economics (1990) at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. She completed her PhD at the faculty of Social Geography at Utrecht University in 1999.

Grants

Over the years the SCP received multiple grants from the Ministry of Health and Welfare for research on informal caregiving. Grants were received also from National Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for a Phd-project and an expert lab on young carers.
