Training and supervision plan

Doctoral training at VU Amsterdam is organized in graduate schools. After you have been accepted for admission to the doctoral program as a PhD candidate you and your supervisor devise a training and supervision plan (TSP).

The TSP is the core part of every PhD process. It is considered an agreement between the candidate and the supervisor on obligations and duties of both parties and consists of 8 elements of information:

  • type of PhD candidate
  • faculty and graduate school
  • financing instrument/time allocation
  • conference plan/workshop, study visit, summer school plan
  • internships for PhDs
  • supervision plan
  • research plan
  • teaching plan
  • training plan
  • PhD trajectory for 3 or 4 years,
  • evaluation and reporting plan

The PhD candidate must obtain 30EC (European credits) through the training component.

VU Amsterdam Summer School

For all candidates who are unable to attend training courses during the year, or would like to deepen their knowledge in certain topics the VU offers PhD courses in VU Amsterdam Summer School. This summer 34 courses are offered during the months July and August. Each course has a duration of two weeks and a minimum of 45 contact hours, awarding 3 ECTS.

VU Amsterdam Summer School distinguishes itself by three key elements:

  • Interdisciplinary and small-scale courses of high academic level, with a maximum of 25 students;
  • A diverse classroom: over 50 nationalities are represented each year. No more than 5 students from the same university are allowed in one course.
  • Using the Netherlands and Amsterdam as a classroom: all courses include excursions related to the course content.

PhD candidates pay a tuition for courses. VU Amsterdam Summer School offers a €150 early bird discount, €200 Alumni&Friends discount, €250 discount for students from partner universities abroad (more than 270 universities) and 10 scholarships worth a full tuition fee waiver.

Conferences and workshops

Attending conferences and organizing workshops is an essential part of VU Amsterdam doctoral education. We expect our PhD candidates to engage with their communities and start creating professional networks through their participation in and/or organization of conferences and workshops. As a VU Amsterdam PhD candidate you can include participation in conferences and organization of workshops in your training and supervision plans.
