Introduction to the research project
There is information in the literature on a number of contaminants in indoor dust and air. This information is, however, scattered and incomplete. While substantial data exist on well-known contaminants such as PCBs, chlorinated dioxins, some brominated FRs, and some plasticizers (phthalates), only limited information is available on other emerging compounds, particularly those being used as replacement chemicals for recently banned or restricted chemicals.
SHINE will carry out of a review on emerging substances in indoor air and dust. Information will be collected from literature, ECHA chemical database, previous LRI projects and other relevant databases. SHINE will use this information to perform non-target analysis to identify chemicals for which there is a shortage of information indoors. In addition, target analysis will be carried out in indoor dust and air samples from schools/daycare centers, homes and offices.
Finally, existing human exposure models will be used to predict the internal human exposure for a set of emerging substances in EU populations. The predicted internal human exposures will be verified against measured biomonitoring data. The results will be used to provide suggestions for model optimization or adjustments (if needed) and formulate suggestions for biomonitoring of new emerging substances.
The following objectives have been set for this project:
- To provide an overview of existing information on chemicals found indoors by carrying out a literature search.
- Sampling and targeted analysis of emerging contaminants in dust and air of schools/daycare centres, homes and offices in various European countries.
- Non-target screening of the same samples collected under objective 2 to identify additional contaminants and combinations of chemicals.
- To verify if existing exposure models can be used for the new chemicals found, and propose modifications to the models if needed.
- To compare the measured and modelled data with biomonitoring data from the literature and other projects in which partners are participating.
Novel plasticizers, pesticides, organophosphate and novel brominated flame retardants (OPFRs, NBFRs), HBCD, fluorinated compounds (PFASs), will be analyzed in indoor dust and air samples from schools, homes, offices and daycare centers. In addition, using a suspect list derived from a database compiled within the project that includes information on chemicals that are used in consumer products, suspect screening and non-target analysis will be carried out. Modeling to predict human exposure is carried out by the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO).
