Preparing for endings and beginnings

Working hybrid involves many transitions. Commutes are a part of the work day rather than marking its start and end. Some transitions are accelerated - jumping from online meeting to online meeting has eliminated the need for walks from here to there. Buildings are being retired and renewed.

From endings…

A shift from desktops to laptops brings with it a change in working environments. From rows of small offices to open, shared spaces. This picture foregrounds gray boxes, yet to be unpacked. It calls our attention to the preparation involved in moving out and leaving an era behind. It inspires us to think about endings and beginnings and all the work, not only physical but mainly emotional, required to take each item and decide what to do. What is its worth? Where does it belong? Is the ‘where’ of work a material condition or an emotional state?

“The department is moving to another building, where it will be very different. I think I'm one of the people who's trying to see it in a positive way, because I think there are many positive points.”

… To beginnings

Embrace the Renewal: This image captures not just a construction site, but the revitalization of an existing space. Amidst this transformation is the question of the significance of physical workspaces. When screens are our daily focus, do we truly need a designated workplace? While embracing a nomadic work style may not resonate with everyone, it presents opportunities for exploration and adaptation. Yet there also remains a longing for stability. The comfort of a familiar workspace is still cherished by some. In the new open workspaces, collective rather than individual identities are emphasized. This prompts a shift in how we inhabit work spaces and tailor them to our needs.

“Through the glass walls you can see who's here. So, if people need me, they just drop in. But with the glass walls, you can hear through the walls.”
