AI implementation in healthcare

PhD candidate Bas Becker investigates the social implications of the implementation of artificial intelligence clinical decision-support systems and how this technology affects the process of organisational and medical decision-making.

Using an ethnographic approach, his doctoral research zooms in on the concrete practices of (Dutch) healthcare professionals to understand how they interpret, justify, and ultimately rely (or not) on algorithmic output in the process of informed clinical decision-making. It concretely investigates ICU practices in a large hospital and how ICU doctors interact with the technology. The research sheds new light on the implications of AI implementation for clinician practice.
