During the Nationale Wiskunde Dagen (NWD) — the annual conference for mathematics teachers in the Netherlands — the VU Mathematics Department was represented by a workshop given by Senja Barthel. The session titled "Wanneer zijn twee knopen hetzelfde? - When are two knots the same?” introduced participants to the fascinating world of knot theory.
Starting from the basic question “What is a knot?”, the workshop guided participants through ways mathematicians distinguish knots using invariants such as crossing numbers and investigated alternating knots, rational tangles and rational knots. The session led to active participation, creating an engaging atmosphere for all involved.
Through its contribution to NWD, the VU Mathematics Department continues to strengthen its connection with mathematics education and to share inspiring examples of university-level mathematics with teachers across the country.
