The Learning & Reasoning Group (L&R) has received a Huawei Olympus Mons award (named after the highest mountain in the solar system) for their work on “Crossing the probabilistic-logic barrier”. Each year, Huawei sets a number of challenges which are open to research groups worldwide. This year, 50 research groups made a submission and 5 awards were given, with L&R the only group outside China to receive the award. Unlike many awards, the Olympus Mons award is for the work of the entire group. The L&R submission mentioned work by several PhDs, postdocs and staff members across a number of years, on scaling up graph neural networks, analysing the use of fuzzy logic in machine learning, a notation for neurosymbolic architectures, and neurosymbolic link predictors for knowledge graphs. The award comes with a glass statue and €25.000 to be spent on the work of the group.
